  1. Turkmenistan - Consular Information Sheet

  4. Country Description:  Turkmenistan is a country  undergoing profound
  5. political and economic change.  Tourist facilities are not highly developed,
  6. and many of the goods and services taken for granted in other European
  7. countries are not yet available.  Internal travel, especially by air, may be
  8. disrupted by fuel shortages and other problems.

  10. Entry Requirements:  A passport and visa are required.  Without a visa,
  11. travelers cannot register at hotels and will be required to leave the
  12. country immediately via the route by which they entered.  Visas for
  13. Turkmenistan are issued at the Embassy of Turkmenistan, 1511 K Street, N.W.,
  14. Suite 412, Washington, D.C. 20005, telephone (202) 737-4800.  Visas may also
  15. be obtained on arrival at the airport for ten dollars for a ten day stay--
  16. without presenting an invitation letter.  Extensions may be authorized by
  17. applying at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Mondays, Thursdays, and
  18. Fridays.  A letter of invitation should then be furnished by the traveler's
  19. host to support the application.

  21. Medical Facilities:  Medical care in Turkmenistan is limited.  The U.S.
  22. Embassy maintains a list of English speaking physicians in the area.  There
  23. is a severe shortage of basic medical supplies, including disposable
  24. needles, anesthetics, and antibiotics.  Elderly travelers and those with
  25. existing health problems may be at risk due to inadequate medical
  26. facilities.  Doctors and hospitals often expect immediate cash payment for
  27. health services.  U.S. medical insurance is not always valid outside the
  28. United States.  Travelers have found that in some cases, supplemental
  29. medical insurance with specific overseas coverage has proved to be useful.

  33. Crime Information:  Turkmenistan has a low rate of violent crime, but common
  34. street crime has increased, especially at night.  The loss or theft abroad
  35. of a U.S. passport should be reported immediately to the local police and
  36. the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.  The Department of State's pamphlet
  37. "A Safe Trip Abroad" provides useful information on guarding valuables and
  38. protecting personal security while traveling abroad.  Additional information
  39. on the region can be found in the brochure, "Tips for Travelers to Russia."

  43. Currency Regulations:  Turkmenistan is a cash only economy.  Travelers
  44. checks and credit cards are not accepted.

  46. Drug Penalties:  U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in
  47. which they are traveling.  Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking in
  48. illegal drugs are strict and convicted offenders can expect jail sentences
  49. and fines.

  51. Registration:  Americans are encouraged to register at the Consular Section
  52. of the U.S. Embassy where they can obtain updated information on travel and
  53. security within Turkmenistan.
